NEW YORK CITY: The New York City (NYC) Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor said that law enforcement officials discovered nearly 30 pounds of cocaine and US$3 million in cash in secret compartments in a New York City apartment used by a major cocaine dealer.

The office added that after investigators found cash, drugs, and luxury watches stuffed inside furniture in an apartment in the Bronx, a 60-year-old man was arrested on March 20.

Investigators using police dogs discovered currency notes wrapped in bundles in large hidden compartments in dressers, nightstands, and a coffee table.

The arrest was the culmination of a two-month investigation that involved state and city police and officials from the federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Officials conducted surveillance and observed the suspect entering and exiting the building several times with a bag. They found the suspect had cocaine when he was stopped, prompting a search of the apartment.

Despite being used to sell cocaine to wholesale distributors in the New York City area, as well as other parts of the Northeast and the Midwest, the drug den did not have any extra security or surveillance system, officials added.

In a statement, Bridget Brennan, NYC Special Narcotics Prosecutor, said, “This investigation shows how lucrative the cocaine trafficking business can be.”

At his arraignment on March 23, the suspect, who was previously deported in 2006, was charged with trafficking drugs and criminal possession, and was ordered held without bail.
