Hubble Captures Stunning Lenticular Galaxy
August 12, 2023
The Hubble Space Telescope has captured a stunning image of the lenticular galaxy NGC 6684, located approximately 44 million light-years away in the Pavo constellation. Lenticular galaxies have a lens-shaped appearance with no prominent spiral arms, putting them between elliptical and spiral galaxies in terms of structure. NGC 6684 stands out with its diffuse ghostly appearance, further accentuated by the absence of dark dust lanes found in other galaxies. The image was taken as part of the “Every Known Nearby Galaxy” census project, which aims to observe galaxies within 10 megaparsecs that Hubble has not previously observed.
