TOKYO, Japan: In a move to re-launch its high-margin and iconic sports utility vehicle, Toyota has announced that it will sell the first hybrid version of its Land Cruiser in North America and other key markets.

Toyota said it will assemble the new model of the Land Cruiser, as well as smaller variants, at two factories in Japan.

In a press release, the world’s largest automaker said the new model will be sold as a hybrid in North America, while a gasoline or diesel powertrain will also be released in other markets, such as Europe or Australia.

In an interview with Reuters, Hiroki Nakajima, Toyota’s chief technology officer, said the company aims to meet customers’ needs, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

“We will offer vehicles that customers hope for,” he said.

Seiji Sugiura, analyst at Tokai Tokyo Research Institute, said Land Cruiser models are relatively big cars that come with a higher profitability for Toyota, just as is the case for other models, such as its Alphard van.

“Land Cruisers and Alphards have a high profitability, even under the Toyota brand,” Sugiura added, as quoted by Reuters.

Toyota said the new Land Cruiser will be available in Japan in the first half of 2024, and be available in the US in the spring of 2024.

Gasoline and diesel-powered versions of the new Land Cruiser will be offered in markets, such as Western and Eastern Europe and the Middle East, and a smaller Land Cruiser version will be available in Japan in the winter, the company added.
