ROLLING FORK, Miss.—A powerful tornado killed at least 25 people as a storm ripped across Mississippi on Friday night, devastating rural communities in its path, injuring dozens and destroying buildings across the state.

This Delta town of 1,800 residents, about an hour northwest of Jackson, Miss., took a direct hit. Wreckage approaching the area was nowhere, and then everywhere all at once. Only a handful of houses in a roughly half-mile stretch still resembled houses at all. Under a cloudless blue sky on Saturday afternoon, whole blocks were little more than spaced-out piles of wood, metal and glass. Metal sheeting hung limply over electrical wires. Huge old oak trees and utility poles were snapped cleanly in half, with scattered cars smashed like toys.
