ENTEBBE, Uganda: Uganda’s health minister Jane Ruth Aceng said an Ebola infection has been confirmed in Jinja in eastern Uganda, which is the first time the outbreak has spread to a new region from the country’s center.
Since the epidemic was declared on 20th September, authorities have been struggling to contain the highly infectious disease, which is a deadly hemorrhagic fever that generally kills about half of the people it infects.
The health ministry confirmed that Uganda has so far recorded a total of 135 confirmed cases and 53 deaths.
Aceng said on Twitter that the ebola infection in Jinja involved a 45-year-old man who died last week, adding, “Contact tracing and epidemiological investigations have been activated.”
Unlike the more common Zaire strain that recently caused outbreaks in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo, the virus circulating in Uganda is the Sudan strain, for which there is no vaccine.
