THIS DAY IN HISTORY
MAY 12TH
DON’T SPIT!!!
On this day in history, May 12th 1896, 129 years ago today, the city of New York made it illegal to spit. As many men chewed tobacco and spit on a regular basis, most were unhappy with this new law. Signs were put up all over New York City reminding people not to spit. The signs also reminded people of the germs that were being spread because of the excessive spit that was all over the city. If caught spitting a person could be fined, or even go to jail. Ironically, many of the signs that were reminding people not to expectorate were often covered in it. The fight against phlegm all began on May 12th, 1896, 129 years ago today.
