Social Security continues to undergo changes including increased payments for some Americans and the impending end of paper checks distributed by the benefits program.

President Donald Trump has also said he would like to end taxation of Social Security benefits. That hasn’t happened yet, but Trump has signed an executive order to end the issuing of most physical Social Security checks on Sept. 30, 2025. The Treasury Department can make exceptions for those who do not have a checking account.

Most of nearly 74 million who get Social Security benefits receive them on Wednesdays throughout the month. For instance, if your birthdate falls between the first and 10th of the month, you are paid on the second Wednesday of the month, which is May 14; between the 11th and 20th, you’re paid on the third Wednesday (May 21), and if you were born after the 20th of the month, you get paid on the fourth Wednesday of the month (May 28), according to the Social Security Administration’s calendar.

A reminder: The Social Security Administration suggests if you don’t receive your payment on the expected date, allow three additional mailing days before contacting the agency; most arrive timely because 99% of beneficiaries are paid electronically.

Two SSI payments coming in May

Beneficiaries who get Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will get two checks in the month of May. The first check, due on May 1, is the benefit for the month of May 2025. A second check is due on May 30, the benefit check for the month of June. SSI beneficiaries get two payments because for months when the first of the month falls on a federal holiday or a weekend, SSI benefits are issued early. June 1 is a Sunday.
