(Taiwan English News/Huang Ziti Comprehensive Report) Japan has listed China as a top threat in its 2019 defense white paper. Seeing that the tensions in the Taiwan Strait are not diminishing, Japan plans to expand its military force in the next five years, to a degree not seen since World War II. most.
Reuters quoted Japanese officials and security experts as saying that Japan is disturbed by the rapid modernization of China’s military and its increasing intimidation.
Philip Davidson, the commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, boldly predicted last year that China might invade Taiwan by force by 2027. If a war between the two sides is inevitable, Japan cannot stay out of it. The CCP’s capture of Taiwan will jeopardize the main waterway through which Japan’s oil and manufacturing raw materials pass. Officials revealed that despite differences in views across the government, the direction is the same – 2027 will be a critical year.

Reuters analysis pointed out that under the delicate diplomatic and economic relations between Japan and China, it is impossible for Japan to openly defend Taiwan, but Japan, which is only 150 kilometers away from Taiwan, is likely to be involved in the Taiwan Strait War, and its defense budget is more than four times. China is a tough battle.
Japanese officials said that in the event of a conflict in the Taiwan Strait, China may occupy Japanese islands adjacent to Taiwan and build an air defense system to counter foreign attacks. In August, China launched missiles that landed in waters less than 160 kilometers away from the Japanese islands, in retaliation for a visit by U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan. Logistic facilities such as Japanese military bases, airports, and ports may also become potential targets for Chinese missiles. After all, these locations are likely to serve as strongholds for American troops.
An NHK poll released this month showed that 55 percent of 1,247 Japanese support an increase in the defense budget, while 29 percent oppose it. Among those who support military expansion, 61% believe that public spending should be diverted to military use.
The ruling Liberal Democratic Party has decided to double its military spending within five years to 10 trillion yen (NT$2.1 trillion). The additional spending will be used to acquire and improve long-range missiles, including anti-ship missiles and air-to-surface missiles, which can strike warships and land targets in China and North Korea. Other major armament plans include the deployment of new fighter jets from 2030, such as the Tempest stealth fighter, developed in partnership with the UK. As for US arms dealers such as Lockheed Martin (Lockheed), Boeing (Boeing), Northrop Grumman (Northrop Grumman), it is also expected to benefit.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will announce the details of the defense budget and a new defense strategy in December, which is expected to give Japan a more important regional defense role so that it can cooperate with the US military stationed in Japan.
