Major Hurricane Irma to slam northern Caribbean as it tracks toward the US this week By Renee Duff, AccuWeather meteorologist September 04, 2017, 8:18:11 AM EDT Major Hurricane Irma will slam the northern Caribbean islands with flooding rain, damaging winds and dangerous seas before eyeing the United States this week. “Irma is a serious threat for the Caribbean islands and United States,” AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Meteorologist Paul Pastelok said. Irma, currently a Category 3 hurricane, poses an imminent danger to the northernmost Leeward Islands. Preparations for the storm should be rushed to completion in these areas. “Rain and gusty winds may start as early as Tuesday,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Rob Miller said. Irma track 9.4 AM Irma has been fluctuating in intensity over the past few days, but is expected to strengthen to a Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 130-156 mph (209-251 km/h) on its closest approach to the islands. The storm will turn to the north and west over the coming days. This track will put Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, Anguilla and the British Virgin Islands, in the brunt of the storm’s rain and wind spanning Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday. Widespread power outages and damage to trees and structures are likely where the eye of the storm passes directly over or makes its closest approach. Rainfall will be heavy enough to trigger flash flooding, mudslides and road washouts. “Severe effects from the storm may be limited to a radius 50 miles (80 km) of the center, while the storm moves through the tropics,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said. Rough surf will spread outward from the storm, leading to dangerous swimming and boating conditions along the east-facing beaches of the Lesser Antilles. Small craft should head to port and remain there until Irma has passed. Irma impacts Caribbean 9/3 Cruise and shipping interests in the projected path of Irma should make plans to reroute. During the middle and latter half of the week, Irma will move close to Puerto Rico and Hispaniola with the worst of the storm expected to miss the islands to the north. However, Irma will still track close enough to bring flooding rain and damaging winds to the islands. Mountainous areas that receive heavy rain will also be at risk for mudslides. There is an increasing concern that the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Bahamas will face very dangerous conditions at the end of the week and into the weekend as Irma tracks nearby or possibly through the islands. Those in Cuba will also be at risk for intense rain and wind, especially the near the northern coast. Irma Bahamas/Cuba threat 9.4 AM Will Irma impact the U.S. East Coast? The exact path of Irma beyond the end of the week remains uncertain and will depend on a variety of moving parts in the atmosphere. A landfall in Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas is all in the realm of possibilities. The potential remains for the storm to curve northward and miss the East Coast entirely. Irma could also take a more southern track and brush Cuba. RELATED: AccuWeather hurricane center 6 ways to prepare now for hurricanes How does Harvey measure up to Hurricane Katrina, other US flooding catastrophes? “The eastward or northeast progression of a non-tropical system pushing across the central and eastern U.S. this week will highly impact the long-range movement of Irma,” AccuWeather Hurricane Expert Dan Kottlowski said. How fast or slow this non-tropical system moves will determine whether Irma takes a west-northwest path toward the southern Atlantic Seaboard or gets steered more to the north and away from land. Irma possible tracks 9.4 AM “This hurricane has the potential to be a major event for the East Coast. It also has the potential to significantly strain FEMA and other governmental resources occurring so quickly on the heels of Harvey,” Evan Myers, Expert Senior Meteorologist and Chief Operating Officer said. Any potential impacts to the United States would not occur until next weekend and the second week of September. “The U.S. has not sustained a direct hit from two Category 4 or above hurricanes in more than 100 years,” Myers said. Given the uncertainty that remains, all interests from the Bahamas to Florida, the Carolinas, southern New England and Bermuda should closely monitor the forecast path of Irma this week and review emergency and evacuation procedures in case they need to be implemented. “As we saw just 10 days ago with Harvey, it is important to be ready to evacuate and be prepared with at a minimum, a list of items you would take if you had 30 minute notice or 1 hours notice of 6 hours or a day to evacuate,” Myers said. Another tropical threat brewing Behind Irma, a disorganized area of showers and thunderstorms located hundreds of miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands will need to be monitored for potential development. This system will move into a favorable environment for organizing and gaining strength as it moves to the west-northwest toward the Lesser Antilles during the middle and latter part of this week. The next storm in the Atlantic Basin would acquire the name Jose. I’m putting my money on Trump for winning the election. Not my ideal choice, but by far the best choice that we have.” —Doug Casey, April 21, 2016 Ten months ago, Doug Casey, a libertarian philosopher and multi-millionaire speculator, predicted Donald Trump’s victory. In fact, he was so confident of the outcome, he even placed two separate personal bets on the election. A $500 bet where he won 5-to-1, and another with a leading investor where he won 100 ounces of silver. But now Casey is issuing an even more shocking prediction about Trump’s presidency… It involves the U.S. dollar and a controversial new law the Federal Reserve may be forced to enact. In fact, according to my source, Fed members just wrapped up a special “behind-closed-doors” meeting to discuss one of the most dramatic changes to the U.S. dollar in the last 100 years. A change that not only affects how we spend, save, and earn… But that will also transform the very nature of “money” itself. To uncover the story, I flew down to Aspen, Colorado to meet Doug Casey in person. Casey is one of the most connected men in the financial world: He’s debated presidential candidates… He’s met with (and spoke at the same national conference as) former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan… And he’s also been invited by the leaders of twelve different countries to discuss monetary reform. Some even credit Casey with introducing the concept of “economic citizenship,” where individuals can become citizens of a country simply by making an investment. In the interview that follows, you’ll hear Casey’s strong warning to Americans regarding the consequences of a new potential money plan by the Fed that could start in the next 6 months. You’ll also hear the four steps he’s personally taking today to prepare himself and protect his savings. Copyright 2017 Legacy Research Group COPYRIGHT 2017 | BONNER & PARTNERS
Trucking Industry Loses 1,400 Jobs in January, Labor Department Reports inShare Print This E-mail This John Sommers II for Transport Topics For-hire trucking lost 1,400 jobs in January, while overall payrolls increased by 227,000, the Labor Department reported Feb. 3. Transportation and warehousing, which includes trucking, lost 4,000 positions. The warehousing and storage sector gained 9,400 positions, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. The increase in December payrolls followed a 157,000 rise in December. The median forecast in a Bloomberg News survey of economists called for a 180,000 advance. The jobless rate rose to 4.8%, and average hourly earnings grew 2.5% from January 2016, the weakest since August, Bloomberg News reported. Support activities for transportation lost 5,600 jobs, and the couriers and messengers sector lost 7,400 position, according to BLS. “There’s more slack in the labor market than the unemployment rate implies, but we’re continuing to make progress in absorbing that slack,” Russell Price, senior economist at Ameriprise Financial Inc. in Detroit, told Bloomberg. “As that happens, wage and salary growth should gain additional traction.” The January results were helped by hiring in construction, retail, finance and professional services. The 36,000 increase in construction payrolls was the largest since March, Bloomberg reported. Pennsylvania State Police Stage Voter Fraud Sting Company allegedly forging registrations in Keystone State also signed up phony voters in Ohio by Jim Stinson | Updated 04 Nov 2016 at 10:38 PM Pennsylvania state police have raided two offices of a voter registration group, just as the election approaches in what could be a crucial state. Police raided the Philadelphia office of FieldWorks LLC’s office on Thursday after raiding another office in Delaware County, Pa., just days earlier. What bothers election watchdogs is that in many cases observed in past elections in Cleveland, both the real person and the phony voter both voted. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the police used a warrant seeking forms that could be used to “construct fraudulent voter registration forms” and “completed voter registration forms containing same or similar identifying information of individuals on multiple forms.” The Washington-based group has pledged to work with state police, the Inquirer reported. ADVERTISING Attorney General Bruce Beemer suggested to the Inquirer that the group was employing registrants who were cutting corners to meet quotas. One way to do that is to re-register existing voters with subtle spelling differences in their names. autoplay: on | off That technique sounds familiar, because FieldWorks did it in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, according to Logan Churchwell, communications director for True the Vote, the voter-fraud watchdog. The group had previously signed up phony voters in the Cleveland area, said Churchwell. And Churchwell agrees that in many cases, the volunteers or the paid staff are looking to meet quotas for new voters. Late Thursday, the Inquirer reported that FieldWorks fired Ruthann Alexander for not meeting an unofficial quota of 18 people per day. How To Fix Your Fatigue And Increase Energy Dr. Gundry reveals 3 common foods that you would never guess were the cause of your fatigue. Watch Video: Ad By Gundry MD FieldWorks could also claim it registered some persons already on the voter rolls, some persons who forgot they were already signed up. But that doesn’t explain why county election officials didn’t catch those cases, in Ohio or elsewhere. Churchwell says identifying information that is supposed to help officials catch that, like the last four numbers of Social Security number, are always off by a digit or two. So the phony registrants stay on the voter rolls. But what bothers election watchdogs is that in many cases observed in past elections in Cleveland, both the real person and the phony voter voted. Churchwell cannot explain exactly how that was allowed. When Cleveland-area officials were asked why by True the Vote, they did not offer an answer. Watchdog Alleges Virginia Prepping to Accommodate Mass Voter Fraud Officials stockpile a million provisional ballots in swing state governed by a close Clinton ally On the surface, it sounds like voter fraud. People registered phony people and someone voted them. But Beemer said it doesn’t look like that. Churchwell says the systems are so weak to find duplicate registrations, even though they are supposed to work, that it happens all the time. Such registration fraud, he said, is easy to commit, and prosecutors don’t have time to go after all the cases. In Indiana, another group was investigated by Indiana State Police. Police raided offices of Patriot Majority U.S., a nonprofit advocacy organization, which signs up voters in urban and black areas. Liberals immediately cried foul, and reminded people that Indiana’s governor is Mike Pence, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s running mate. Have You Seen These Sedans? A WEALTHY Chinese businessman in Guangzhou, China turned heads recently when he was seen shopping with the help of some robotic assistance – an entourage of eight robots, to be precise. The middle-aged tycoon was photographed splurging on some jewelry, escorted by his mechanical personal assistants that carried his designer purchases, as well as his coat, bottled water, and a towel (just in case he broke a sweat from all the shopping). There were many, however, who were not impressed – Chinese media called the man a “tuhao”, which is a derogatory slang term used to refer to the newly rich who lack sophistication. Netizens have also called the man’s flagrant show of wealth “embarrassing”. Home | News | New York Trucking Company Fired Driver for Reporting Truck Safety Concerns New York Trucking Company Fired Driver for Reporting Truck Safety Concerns By WorkersCompensation.com 1 hour ago Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font New York, NY (WorkersCompensation.com) – All the truck driver wanted was a safe vehicle to operate. His employer fired him instead. In so doing, Brindi Trailer Sales and Services Inc. of Meridale, New York, and owner Robert Urbina Brindi violated the anti-discrimination provisions* of the Surface Transportation Assistance Act, an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has found. “This driver was fired for doing the right thing. A defective truck is a danger not only to its driver but to other motorists on the road. Commercial truck drivers have a legal right to report safety issues to their employer without fear of termination or retaliation. Violating the law can put workers at risk and has costly consequences for the offending employer,” said Robert Kulick, OSHA’s regional administrator in New York. Shortly after starting work with Brindi in 2011, the driver began notifying the company of defective equipment on his truck, including ineffective brakes, steering issues, non-functioning turn signals, leaks and a cracked windshield. He requested these conditions be repaired. The company refused. In February 2012, the driver contacted the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, which inspected the truck and found 16 violations. The truck was pulled from service until repairs were made. The driver notified Brindi and was summarily discharged. The worker filed a whistleblower complaint with OSHA, which found merit to the complaint. OSHA has now ordered Brindi to pay the driver $32,642, 20 in lost wages, $10,000 in punitive damages and $3,060.02 in attorney’s fees and to expunge the driver’s employment records. The employee and Brindi each have 30 days from receipt of OSHA’s findings to file objections and request a hearing before the Labor Department’s Office of Administrative Law Judges. OSHA enforces the whistleblower provisions of the STAA and 21 other statutes protecting employees who report violations of various airline, commercial motor carrier, consumer product, environmental, financial reform, food safety, health care reform, nuclear, pipeline, worker safety, public transportation agency, railroad, maritime and securities laws. Employers are prohibited from retaliating against employees who raise various protected concerns or provide protected information to the employer or to the government. Employees who believe that they have been retaliated against for engaging in protected conduct may file a complaint with the Secretary of Labor to request an investigation by OSHA’s Whistleblower Protection Program. Bipolar medicine mistakenly handed out to trick-or-treat children Canadian pharmacy accidentally mixed the silver pills in with their sweets 38 103 0 0 141 Email Children play trick or treat on Halloween Children play trick or treat on Halloween Photo: Alamy Harriet Alexander By Harriet Alexander, New York8:53PM GMT 01 Nov 2015Follow Children in Canada roaming the streets for Halloween got more than they bargained for when a pharmacy mistakenly gave them bipolar pills instead of sweets. The children went into a pharmacy in Quebec City during a “trick or treat” tour of the neighbourhood. But a customer had just dropped her son’s bipolar medicine on the floor, and left without realising. Another customer at the pharmacy picked up the silver-wrapped capsules, and put them on the counter. And when children came into the shop, Canadian channel CBC reported that the medicine was mixed up inside the sweet basket. “So, unfortunately, we don’t know how, an employee just mixed it with the candy by accident and distributed it to the kids,” said Constable Melissa Cliche, of the Quebec City police. Seven pills, each wrapped in an individual blister package, were given to trick-or-treating children. Police said the pills were not dangerous, but if ingested they could produce minor side effects such as trembling, nausea and drowsiness. It was not clear whether the children had consumed the pills.
