TAIPEI, Taiwan: Taiwan’s economics minister Wang Mei-hua has attracted new business worth $940 million during meetings with top executives from four major tech firms in California’s Silicon Valley, the ministry said this week.
Wang visited the U.S. to respond to “concerns” about supply chains and geopolitical issues, her office said.
The world’s largest semiconductor producer, Taiwan is home to the world’s largest contract chip maker, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp, and supplies chips to most major global tech firms.
As China ramps up military drills to assert its sovereignty claims over the island, many U.S. businesses have expressed concerns about being too reliant upon Taiwan.
In a statement, the ministry stated that Wang met executives from NVIDIA, Cisco Systems, Applied Materials and Synopsys.
“The visits are expected to bring back U.S. research and development investment and orders in Taiwan worth more than $938 million,” it said.
Also this week, Wang said that global supply chains of vital semiconductors would be secure if Taiwan remains safe.
