WARSAW, Poland: Poland has announced that it will purchase 48 FA-50 fighter jets from South Korea, along with 180 K2 Black Panther tanks and howitzers.
This is part of Poland’s upgrade of its military, in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Poland has also announced that it will double the size of its army.
Poland earlier said it would increase defense spending to 3 percent of gross domestic product.
“This year, the first units will be delivered and in total there will be 180 tanks in the first order; ultimately, these tanks will be produced in Poland,” Warsaw’s defence minister Mariusz Blaszczak said in an extract from an interview with conservative weekly Sieci published online.
“We are interested in purchasing three squadrons, that is 48 aircraft,” Blaszczak said. “The first aircraft would be delivered to Poland next year.”
The K2 Black Panther tank is made by Hyundai Rotem, while the FA-50 fighter jet is manufactured by Korea Aerospace Industries.
