SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — For several years now, the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been undergoing renovations. Once the renovations are complete, the Salt Lake City landmark will be open to tours.

The tours will run for six months from April to October 2027. Church President Russell M. Nelson invited people from around the world to come to Salt Lake City and take the tour.

“We warmly invite our friends to come and learn about God’s plan for His children and rejoice in the love of Jesus Christ,” Nelson said in a statement. “Details about this event will be shared as April 2027 approaches.”

About the Salt Lake Temple

The Salt Lake Temple has been an identifying feature on the city’s skyline since its founding.

Construction on the temple began in February 1853 and took 40 years to complete. According to Utah.com, early pioneers used oxen to haul massive granite blocks to the building site – a process described as being “slow and difficult.”

The Salt Lake Temple underwent its first major renovation in the 1960s, nearly 100 years after its completion. This renovation added modern technologies to the building such as mechanical and air conditioning systems.

The latest renovation started in 2019 with the goal of stabilizing the structure against seismic activity. The renovation also redesigned the surrounding Temple Square with new art fixtures, buildings, and heated sidewalks.

The current renovations were expected to only last four years, with a completion date expected in 2023. However, the massive overhaul of the temple’s foundation and surrounding grounds, proved to be extensive, pushing back the completion to 2026.
