A terrorist who killed at least 10 people and injured 35 others after plowing a vehicle into a crowd celebrating New Year on New Orleans’ Bourbon Street has been killed, sources say.

The driver rammed into the large group at high speed, then got out and started firing a weapon, witnesses said. Investigators later added that they found what appeared to be improvised explosives at the crash site that did not detonate.

Two police officers were shot and are in stable condition after being hit at the crash scene, where observers later noted that a mysterious object attached to a flagpole had been tied to the suspect’s vehicle

The suspect was named Wednesday morning as Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar, who was reportedly carrying an ISIS flag on his truck.

Police sources later told the New York Times that the suspect was killed in the shootout, and said the pickup truck used in the attack was registered to a 42-year-old man from Houston.

It was reported Wednesday morning by CNN that the suspect lived in New Orleans, and Fox News reported the truck used in the attack was a rental, and had crossed the US-Mexico border on November 16 and was not being driven by the suspect at the time.

Donald Trump said in a statement that an illegal migrant is to blame for the attack, as he branded the incident a ‘pure act of evil.’ It was later reported that Jabbar was a US citizen.

Witnesses claim the suspect was ‘wearing full body armor’ and ‘armed with an assault rifle’, and officials said he was ‘trying to run over as many people as he possibly could’.

Videos circulating on social media showed a chaotic scene at the tourist hotspot as people ran from the casualty-strewn area while bullets rang out in the background.

Ambulances have transported the wounded to five area hospitals, the city added, and the FBI have taken over the ongoing investigation. Homeland Security and the ATF said Wednesday they have joined the multi-agency effort.
