TOOELE, Utah (ABC4) — The President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day SaintsRussell M. Nelson, will dedicate the Church’s 200th temple, which is located in Utah.

The Deseret Peak Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Tooele will be dedicated on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 4 p.m.LDS Church to open Deseret Peak Temple for open house

The temple was originally announced during the April 2019 General Conference of the Church as the Tooele Valley Utah Temple. It was set to be in the city of Erda before the church withdrew its rezoning permit due to concerns about a neighborhood surrounding the temple being built by the Church.

The Church moved the site a few miles south to the northwest corner of Tooele off 2400 North and 400 West.

“The temple will serve Latter-day Saints in the Tooele Valley and surrounding areas, providing a sacred space for worship and spiritual growth,” the Church said on Friday morning.

The LDS Church in recent years has accelerated its temple-building efforts. Since Nelson became the leader of the Church, 185 temples were announced by Nelson. Out of the 367 temples the Church has in total (including those announced, under construction, or renovation), Nelson has announced over half.

According to Church Newsroom, thousands of people visited the Deseret Peak temple during its open house which ran from Sept. 26 to Oct. 19.

What are LDS Temples?

Temples of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are referred to by members as “Houses of the Lord,” according to the Church website. Members hold the entire property of Temples sacred, from the grounds outside to what is inside and what happens inside.MORE INFO: What are Latter-day Saint Temples?

“From the very beginning, there have been sacred places upon the earth where God has communed with His children. They were designated by God and hallowed by His presence as places where He would teach and bless His children,” the Church says on its site.

The Church teaches that throughout biblical history, the Tabernacle carried around was a “portable temple.” The Church also points to several additional scriptures from the Book of Mormon and Doctrine and Covenants, which mention temples on several occasions.
