Hoover Dam.
THIS DAY IN HISTORY
SEPTEMBER 30TH
On this day in history, September 30th, 1935, 89 years ago today, Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt
dedicated the Hoover Dam. The Hoover Dam was a huge project. Under hot and dangerous
conditions many people lost their lives in this monster of a build. The completion of the Hoover
Dam meant that residents of America’s southwest states would have better access to irrigation
and electricity. It created Lake Mead, the largest reservoir by volume in the United States of
America. An interesting fact about this dam is that people couldn’t decide what to call it.
Originally it was called the Boulder Dam. In the end thought it was named for President
Herbert Hoover. This dam helps to control the Colorado River, and sits on the Arizona, Nevada
line. Maybe you’ve seen this dam on your way to Las Vegas. Maybe you’ve played or fished in
the waters of Lake Mead. Maybe you have an ancestor who helped build the dam. Maybe
someone you are related to was present at the dedication on September 30th, 1935, 89 years
ago today when Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt called this dam, “The greatest dam in the world.”
